For decades, Ólafur (the Icelandic president) has made sure to exercise at least 50 minutes a day. "We usually start the day with a power walk with Sámi. But I think he started eating healthier food after we met, he now eats more vegetables and less wine bread," says First Lady Dorrit Moussaieff in an interview with Fréttatímann (News Time) when she is asked about her husband's physical condit...
The best gift is to be with the family
LazyTown is becoming one of the most well-known municipalities in the country. There is an increasing number of people who want to get to know the town firsthand and the people who live there. Now kids in the USA have been invited to get to know the wonderful residents of LazyTown, the mayor, Stephanie and Ziggy, not to mention Robbie Rotten and Sportacus. We at barnablaðin really wanted to know how the residents of LazyTown celebrate Christmas, so we asked Sportacus himself.
The mayor cooks
“Christmas in LazyTown is like no other. On Christmas Day, everyone meets at the mayor’s house at six o’clock. Pixel plays Christmas songs on his keyboard and the rest of us dance around the Christmas tree and sing Christmas songs. The mayor then serves a delicious meal that he cooks himself. In fact, I suspect that Bessie is now helping him quite a bit with his cooking.
We all take care after dinner and whoever got the almond in the Christmas porridge then gets to read the packages. One time Stingy got a present labels to read and it didn’t end well. He said he had all the packages! It took a long time to figure out who should get which package. As the evening goes on, we then have hot chocolate and cookies, as long as Ziggy hasn’t eaten them all. In the end, we sing a Christmas song together and then everyone goes home, happy and satisfied.”
Can the residents have candy for the holidays?
“Some people in LazyTown want all days to be candy day. I agree – every day should be sportscandy days. There is nothing better than having apples and tangerines at Christmas. Lots of energy to fend off the cold. It’s also okay to have a regular treat now and then, if you remember the twenty-times rule! Brush your teeth well and carefully – twenty times up and twenty times down.”
How does Ziggy keep his seat during Christmas?
“Ziggy is very good at helping his friends at Christmas. Once Bessie baked too many cookies and Ziggy was ready to help her eat them. In fact, he ate so much that he became sick. This Christmas he surprised me. He wanted to get toothpaste for Christmas – with a chocolate flavor! There is no one like Ziggy.”
Does anyone need to go to the gym this Christmas?
“There can be quite a lot to do around the holidays, and sometimes you want to forget to exercise and go to the ‘gym’ – as the adults say!” But then just remember that there are so many things you can do at home. I am good at visiting the kids in LazyTown and going to do physical games. Once we went to a skiing competition. We bent our knees and set off – in our minds. Sometimes we had to turn and sometimes we had to jump. If it’s not too cold, we also often go outside and make a snowman or a snow house. It’s a good exercise!”
Does Robbie Rotten go on a Christmas break?
“Poor Robbie Rotten.” He is always trying to do something of his own, but it usually fails for him. Last Christmas he planned to steal all the Christmas packages. But when he saw that the biggest present was for him – from everyone in LazyTown – he became ashamed and canceled everything. He didn’t suspect that the kids in LazyTown thought of him and wanted to give him a present. In the end, he took part in the Christmas celebration at the mayor’s house and sang at the top of his lungs as we danced around the Christmas tree. I wouldn’t be surprised if he dressed in his spare clothes and showed up at our place on Christmas Day. He is always welcome if he promises to behave well.”
Do the residents of LazyTown get Christmas presents from the mayor?
“Everyone gets presents at Christmas. The mayor took a craft course at Bessie’s house a few years ago and is very good at making gifts for the residents. Last Christmas he gave Stephanie a very beautiful diary that he had decorated himself. He gave Pixel a beautiful box for his video games, and to Ziggy a glass for his toothbrush and toothpaste. Trixie got a huge commotion from him and Stingy got a hand-painted money clip – to clip around his Lató money bills. Everyone was very happy, except Bessie. He decided to give her homemade raisin candy, but didn’t know that Bessie is allergic to raisins. She sneezed all night! The most important thing is to remember the true purpose of Christmas. Being with family and friends is the best gift you can think of.”
