The LazyTown run is the most crowded run in the Icelandic country intended for children. The run will be held next Saturday (August 18, 2012) and a good participation of children and loud support from older family members is expected.
There will be a lot of glory in the center of Reykjavík next Saturday when the LazyTown run takes place. This is the seventh time that the run has taken place and is held in Hljómskálagarður and its surroundings. The LazyTown run is intended for children aged eight and under and is devided in five categories.
Gerður Þóra Björnsdóttir, information representative of the Reykjavík Marathon, says that participation is generally good between years, where the weather forecast always has a big impact. “The first year the run took place, over 4,400 kids took part. Then we had little idea who the participation would be. In recent years, the number of competitors has been around 3,000 children. The weather forecast always has a big impact because the participants often decide to run at short notice, unlike the longer runs of the Reykjavík Marathon.”
It’s not just children who take part in the run, but also family members, friends and relatives. Some run along and help the youngest children, while others encourage the older children. All in all, there are therefore between 12–15,000 people in Hjómskálagarður on this day when the weather is good.
The registration deadline is Friday. The registration ceremony will be held in Laugardalshöllinn on the same day between 10:00h and 19:00h and there parents can register their children. However, online registration ends on Wednesday at 16:00h. Participants in the Reykjavík Marathon, including the children competing in the LazyTown run, can pick up their registration documents at the registration ceremony on Friday. There will also be informative lectures on running and preparation for running. Various companies also promote various health-related activities and products at booths. “Kári Steinn will, among other things, give a lecture and then the annual pasta party for the participants will begin at 16 and lasts until 19. It will therefore be a great celebration and we encourage parents to attend with their children to let them experience the atmosphere.”
After the LazyTown run ends, an entertainment program takes place in Hljómskálagarður. Sportacus and Stephanie will be there and it has been heard that Robbie Rotten will also attend. “Jónsi will keep up the fun and introduce the program, as well as welcoming the kids when they reach the finish line. LazyTown will then have a fun program, so the children will definitely have a lot of fun and have a good day with the family.”
