Yesterday, the National Theater (Þjóðleikhúsið) presented the program for the 1999-2000 season. It is planned to premiere ten works this year, half of which are Icelandic. In the spring of 2000 it will be 50 years since the National Theater started showing stage play performances, and Stefán Baldursson, Director of the National Theater, said in his speech that at this point it would be appropriate to look over their shoulder. On this occasion, the theater has chosen to show some of the plays that have marked a turning point in the history of theater. However, also three new Icelandic plays will be shown this year.
The first premiere of the year is Glanni Glæpur í Latabæ by Magnús Scheving and Sigurður Sigurjónsson who also directs. The characters of Latibær hardly need to be introduced to the youngest generation, except for Glanni Glæpur which has now come into play and causes various problems in Latibær.
Stefán Karl Stefánsson plays the role of Glanni Glæpur, since he was recently hired by the National Theater. Other actors include Magnús Olafsson, Lilja Guðrún Þorvaldsdóttir, Örn Arnason, Stein Armann Magnússon and Magnús Scheving. The author of the music is Máni Svavarsson and the lyrics are written by Karl Ágúst Úlfsson.
