“LazyTown breaks a new record every week,” says Máni Svavarsson, the songwriter of the television series about Sportacus and his friends. As has been reported in the media, the single Bing Bang ranked in fourth place in the British singles chart, where no Icelandic musician has managed to get his brainchild so high ranked in the first week. The album sold 100,000 copies in one week and therefore already is worth a gold record, where it is the young actress, Julianna Rose Mauriello, who sings the song.
“I haven’t fully realized this yet, but of course this is a direct result of the great recognitions LazyTown has received,” explains Máni. “We had heard from it earlier in the week that it was doing well, but this result is beyond all expectations,” Máni adds, when the single went straight to the sixth place in the first few days and then continued to rise, steadily.
When you go over the list, it becomes clear that LazyTown ranks with many of the main superstars of the pop world, like P. Diddy together with Christina Aguilera with the song Tell Me, Iceland’s friend Morrissey and the latest Bond song sung by Chris Cornell. Then Gwen Stefani dropped to fifth place on the list with the song Wind It Up in favor of LazyTown.
Máni says that all songs and lyrics are prepared in close collaboration with Magnús Scheving, the creator of the shows, and Bing Bang is no exception to that rule. “The song was created for the play Glanni glæpur í LazyTown in 1999, which was shown at the Þjóðleikhús Theatre, and I remember that it was a relatively short time to make,” explains Máni, and then admits that he had the feeling early on that it would be a decent pop hit.
However, the songwriter says he doesn’t put himself in any special educational role even though he’s writing music for a children’s show. All he wants is to get the whole family to get up from the couch and dance at home in the living room. “I think that is also part of the success at LazyTown, we don’t talk down to the children,” says Máni, who does not want to say that he has become a millionaire despite this great popularity. “It usually takes longer for the money to start rolling in.”
