Þórir Sæmundsson has taken over the role of Robbie Rotten from Stefán Karl Stefánsson in the National Theatre’s production of LazyTown: Ævintýri í Latabæ. The reason is that Stefán has headed to the United States where he has taken on the role of The Grinch in the traveling show How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss.
Stefán has actually played the Grinch every Christmas for the past few years and Ari Matthíasson, the director of the National Theatre, says that Stefán will play in eight shows a week. “This is a huge turn for him, but he has a large family to look after and sometimes people have to go to road work” says Ari.
No drama
Ari says Þórir has played Robbie Rotten in the last three performances of the play and he has done well. Þórir previously had a smaller role in the show as one of Robbie Rotten’s hired thugs, and Snorri Engilbertsson has now stepped into that role. “He’s been in the show since the first episode and knows it well, he just changed roles within it” says Ari, who doesn’t think the character change is not a bad thing.
“He’s great and does this extremely well, although it’s of course difficult to follow in the footsteps of Stefán Karl, who is simply a genius.” Ari believes it’s more the parents than the children who notice the character change. “Although Þórir doesn’t play the role exactly the same, he does it very well, there’s no drama involved here” says Ari. He thinks it’s unlikely that the face of Robbie Rotten in the advertisements will be changed – as Stefán Karl is expected to return to the role after the end of the year.
