Rehearsals begin for Latibær: Sigurgeir Scheving’s play based on the popular story by Magnús Scheving.
Áfram Latibær, by aerobics champion Magnús Scheving, was one of the best-selling books last Christmas (1995), and many children know the Sports Elf and other characters that appear in the story from reading it. Now these young people can expect to see these characters come alive on stage in Bæjarleikhús (theatre house) in the production of Sigurgeir Scheving. Rehearsals begin and the play is scheduled to premiere in early April.
The work is called Latibær, a song and play for children and teenagers of all ages, after Sigurgeir has made it. The play is based on the story by Magnús Scheving, with lyrics by Guðrún Jónsdóttir and music by Máni Svavarsson.
“Magnús’ book, Áfram Latibær, brought a lot of joy when it was published last Christmas. The message is how important it is for everyone to exercise and live a healthy life. The book was accompanied by a CD with songs by Máni and in the show there will be a lot of singing and joy” says Sigureir about his latest offspring.
Shortly after New Year, as Sigurgeir started reading and getting to know all the plays that came up as the company’s spring project, Ruth, his wife, handed him the book Áfram Latibær. After that there was no turning back. “I called Magnús and he immediately liked the idea. Almost a month ago he gave me the green light and I took the book in my hand and started writing. The play will be full-length, but as is often the case, the style needs to be added. I am faithful to the story line, but I will add something to the story to make the play more theatrical.”
Sigurgeir says it was a great privilege to have Guðrún Jónsdóttir to join him. “She wrote the lyrics and we use Máni’s songs that came with the book. It fits really well – known children’s songs in the play and now they all have lyrics by Guðrún.”
Sigurgeir says that Magnús gave him a free hand in the production. “Magnús has not seen it yet but knows my career in acting and trusts me to bring the story to life on stage.” It has taken about a month to make, but Sigurgeir says that he has worked day and night.” But I would never have survived without Kristín Jóna Guðjónsdóttir. She typed out everything I wrote, that was absolutely priceless. “
The main character in the story is the sports elf who makes the people of Latibær turn to a better life. Sigurgeir says that Magnús himself came with this. The sports elf will be played by Hrund Scheving, Sigurgeir’s grandchild.
“Hrund was in gymnastics for eight or ten years, but that was not enough for this play and she is now in strict training as her role requires it. She also has good experience on stage, both at the theaters Leikfélag Vestmannaeyja and Leikfélag Hafharfjarðar. “
Sigurgeir said he wanted to use this opportunity to advertise for players. “Although we have a lot of good people and there are always more young people, there is always room for those who want to get to know the wonders of the theater. We will have a meeting in the company’s bases in Bæjarleikhúsið at 16:00 on Saturday and I encourage those who are interested to attend. Rehearsals will start soon and I expect a premiere of Latibær in early April this spring” said Sigurgeir in conclusion.
