Jól í Latabæ, a CD where the people of Latibær sing and play with guests. The recording was directed by Magnús Scheving and Máni Svavarsson. Playback time 74:52 minutes.
Since the people of Latibær made a name for themselves in 1995, they have had a place in the hearts of many children. This achievement must be considered good because it is a long way from the race to create a whole world that can bring joy and happiness to a child’s heart. Magnús Scheving, an aerobics fighter and more, has done this with great excellence and characters such as Solla Stirða, Goggi mega and Maggi mjói as homemakers in most places. During these six years, the residents have happily embarked on various adventures. They participated in the Olympics and fought Glanni glæpur among other things. And now it is a blessed Christmas that knocks at the door.
For my part, I have found it to be a great success here. The main advantage is the variety, songs are broken up with play pieces and at the end of the disc there is a karaoke party.
The sound of the disc is lively and playful and the aforementioned play elements are very much seen as additions, keeping the flow good and exciting. As far as the songs concerned, the good old ones are the best, e.g. “Christmas is coming”, “The wish for a merry Christmas” (which Páll Rósinkranz sings with inspiration and emotion), that I am not even talking about the essential Christmas song series. Máni Svavarssons’s new songs, on the other hand, tend to be a bit stiff.
New guests in Latibær almost manage to steal the show. Laddi himself plays Santa Claus and does it with a unique genius as we might expect. Ómar Ragnarsson also has a great feature.
Dedicated and good news has been one of Latibær’s main policies throughout history. It touches on topics such as the general celebration of Christmas and, of course, the message of peace that accompanies Christmas. The disk could be split in two for this purpose. The first part deals with the hustle and bustle that usually accompanies the preparation for Christmas, but the second part shifts more peace and excitement.
I must admit, however, that in the past, a critical stance could have been taken on the intolerable – and growing – materialism that accompanies this celebration of light and peace. In some of the texts, I even feel as if they are supporting a glorious gift purchase and other unsightly frenzy.
The disc is richly illustrated and it’s great – this item is all too often forgotten in similar releases.
In general, the CD is most suitable for enjoying and entertaining during the holidays.
